This year, we have the following wines:

Syrah ‘06 Gimelli Vineyard. AVA: Cienega Valley. 250 cases

Ken Gimelli’s vineyard is nestled between the Gabilan mountains and the San Andreas Fault. Days are warm and sunny; nights and mornings cool due to the marine layer off the Monterey  Bay. In these ideal conditions grapes can ripen slowly, intensifying flavor and complexity.

This Syrah is dark and dense with aromas of brown sugar, eucalyptus and smoked ham, followed by flavors of ripe raspberry, black cherry, anise and sandalwood. Bright acidity with smooth tannins and unsweetened chocolate at the finish.

Syrah ’06 Siletto Vineyards. AVA: San Benito County. 250 cases

Clay loam combined with a warmer climate gives this wine it’s ripe fruit character. It is dark and dense with candy apple, ripe black cherries and tar that introduce mouth filling flavors of crème brulee, black cherry and mocha before a peppery finish. Serve it with grilled Italian sausages, hearty stews, spicy barbeque; the list goes on.

Pink Syrah ’07. AVA: San Benito County

Our pink Syrah is crisp and dry, zero percent residual sugar. Forward fruit and aromas of chocolate covered cherries introduce flavors of raspberry, strawberry and cinnamon. Medium bodied with clean acidity, it has a spicy lingering finish. Serve it with grilled salmon, Asian style foods, curries, and spicy barbeque. It’s a great picnic wine; fun to sip with friends at the end of a long week. Serve it cold. Drink it young!

Dry Muscat ’07. AVA: San Benito

Passito di Chardonnay ’06, AVA: Cienega Valley

Each year Alessio meticulously handcrafts this gorgeous dessert wine. It is soft and velvety in the mouth with balanced acidity and notes of apricot, honey and lemon rind. Serve it cold in a small glass with cantucci for dipping as they do in Tuscany, or drizzle it over scoops of ripe cantaloupe or ice cream. Cat loves it over Ben and Jerry, “ Cherry Garcia!”

Rich and dense, but not cloying, it can be dessert in itself.

2007.11.09: ROBERT RICH'S FLAVOR NOTES
"Newcomer Alicats Winery in Hollister sells a big smokey Syrah for $20 that rivals those at twice the price. Husband and wife Alessio and Catherine Carli recently started a tiny winery with only a few hundred case output, making Syrah and Chardonnay. A very smokey intense profile, with that varietally complex Syrah skank of bacon, rubber and tarmac, raw meat, blueberry and rust. On the palate comes the sense of bittersweet chocolate, sweet cream, darkly toasted marshmallows, licorice and tar. New oak profiles are subdued under the intensely complex meaty fruit. I really like this wine, as it expresses the intense side of Syrah."

REVIEW IN APPELATION AMERICA
"The resulting wine is luscious and very sweet, with flavors of dried apricots, vanilla, brown sugar and, curiously, a faint hint of chocolate. It's made in tiny quantities and may not be easy to find, but it's worth the hunt."
